Sensibly Healthy

Finding the balance between healthy and sanity

Welcome to Sensibly Healthy!

July 21, 2019 by Leslie

This site is for women who desire to live a sensibly healthy life. It for those of us who have no desire to spend hours and hours at the gym. It for women who want to eat ice cream, cookies, and Grandma’s homemade pie on occasion without feeling guilty. And it for those of us who don’t want the scales to dominate our lives and our mood.

So what does this look like? Well, I am on a journey to find out.

I think it probably means eating healthy most of the time. And that it means getting some exercise several days a week in order to keep my body functioning at its best.

It all sounds so simple, and yet, for some reason, it’s just soooo hard. We so easily fall off this balance beam of sensible health.

On one side is the danger of eating whatever we want whenever we want partnered with being inactive. No walks, no 20 minute strength-training sessions, no healthy gardening or other physical labor. This side is fraught with the dangers of the over-consumption of junk foods that give our bodies few nutrients while overloading it on calories.

On the other side is the mire of being obsessed with health. This side is fraught with the temptations to be at the gym much more frequently than necessary for sensible health and is quite often obsessed with the scales and the mirror. This is where women are often consumed with guilt if they eat the “wrong” foods.

Women will find themselves at varying levels and degrees of both of these extremes and you will probably find that you tend towards one of these at some level.

I am not necessarily the best person to be writing about this. Let me just admit that right up front. I have never been skinny. And with the onset of middle-age, I have become downright “unskinny”. It’s discouraging to say the least.

What does good health look like for us women who want to be sensibly healthy? What should our goal be? Is it to be skinny? Or is it to be healthy? Is it to have everyone look at me with awe and wonder that I look so amazing at my age or is it to live a productive life for Jesus Christ and for my family? We need to discover our biblical “why” before we can begin this journey. My next post will explore this question of “why” from a biblical perspective.

I hope you will consider joining me as I take a journey to find out just what sensible health looks like.
